Why Do My Tomatoes Stay Green at the Top?
Many gardeners notice that their tomatoes ripen unevenly — the bottom turns a deep red and feels soft, while the top near the stem stays green or yellowish. This issue is quite common and usually not a disease.
The main causes:
1. Uneven ripening (Green shoulders):
This happens when the top of the tomato receives too much direct sunlight or when the plant lacks potassium during ripening.
2. High temperatures:
Very hot weather can slow down the production of lycopene, the natural pigment that gives tomatoes their red color.
3. Genetic factors:
Some heirloom or older varieties naturally have green tops, even when fully ripe.
