Instructions
Prep bread: Spread butter (or mayo) evenly on one side of each slice of bread.
Assemble:
Place 1 slice of bread, butter side down, in a cold skillet.
Add cheese slices evenly on top.
Cover with the second slice of bread, butter side facing up.
Cook low & slow:
Heat skillet to medium-low and cook for 3–4 minutes per side.
Press lightly with a spatula to help the cheese melt evenly.
Flip once, until bread is golden brown and cheese is fully melted.
Serve: Let rest 1 minute before slicing for neat halves.
Tips for Perfection:
Cover the skillet with a lid while cooking — it traps heat to melt cheese without burning bread.
Mix cheeses (sharp cheddar + mozzarella + American) for the best melt + flavor.
Add-ins like tomato slices, bacon, or caramelized onions turn it gourmet.
