Instructions
Step 1: Preheat and Prepare
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
Step 2: Cook the Beef
In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef with diced onion until browned. Drain excess fat. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute more. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
Step 3: Make the Sauce
In a bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, pepper, and paprika until smooth.
Step 4: Assemble the Casserole
Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish.
Top with half of the cooked beef mixture.
Pour half of the soup mixture over the layers.
Sprinkle with 1 cup of cheese.
Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, beef, soup mixture, and cheese.
Dot the top with a few small pieces of butter for extra richness.
Step 5: Bake
Cover with foil and bake for 60 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20–25 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and cheese is golden and bubbly.
Step 6: Serve
Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
Tip: For extra flavor, add a layer of cooked bacon bits or sautéed mushrooms before baking.
