Butter the bread:
Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.
Assemble the sandwiches:
Place one slice of cheese between two slices of bread, with the buttered sides facing outward.
Heat the pan:
Preheat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
Grill:
Cook each sandwich for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing lightly with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.
Serve:
Slice in half and serve hot.
Tips
For extra flavor, sprinkle a pinch of garlic powder or spread a little mayonnaise instead of butter before grilling.
Mix cheeses like cheddar, mozzarella, and Swiss for a richer flavor.
To make it heartier, add tomato slices, ham, or caramelized onions before grilling.
