Easy French Onion Soup

Ingredients (Serves 4)
4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
3 Tbsp unsalted butter
1 Tbsp olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
6 cups beef broth (or half beef, half chicken for a lighter taste)
1/2 cup dry white wine (optional)
1–2 tsp fresh thyme (or 1/2 tsp dried thyme)
1 bay leaf
1 baguette, sliced into rounds
2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss/Provolone)
